KASABIAN’S Tom Meighan tried to use Caroline Flack’s death as an excuse for keeping his private details out of court.

The singer’s defence lawyer said “Caroline Flack committed suicide in similar circumstances” to her client’s “high-profile” case.

An application for Meighan’s address to be withheld came as he avoided jail, despite admitting he assaulted his ex-fiancée.

The hearing was told he “smelt heavily of intoxicants” when he lost it in April and threw his former partner Vikki Ager across the room where she hit her head on a hamster cage. He also grabbed her and struck her on the head.

Meighan, 39, pleaded guilty to one charge of assault by beating after witnessing CCTV footage of his brutal attack at Leicester Crown Court.

Defending Meighan, Michelle Heeley told the court he “offers his sincere apologies to the people he has let down and he has sought to address his behaviour”.

She then made an application for Meighan’s address to be withheld from the public – but the judge dismissed it. He was given an 18-month community order and told to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work. He will also have to complete five days’ rehabilitation.

District Judge Nick Watson said: “There is evidence of previous abusive behaviour.”

The case came a day after Kasabian announced Meighan, of Narborough, Leics, was leaving the band. His ex bandmates condemned his “totally unacceptable” behaviour, saying they were left with “no choice but to ask Tom to leave the band”.
