KEEP THE FAITH

- ■ by CHRIS GOULDING

FRANKIE DETTORI believes Enable can bounce back from her defeat in Sunday’s Coral-eclipse and take top honours this season.

John Gosden, responsible for guiding Enable throughout her star-studded career, made no secret of the fact that the six-yearold would be better for the run in Sunday’s headliner.

This view was also backed up by Dettori, who said: “I didn’t want to be too aggressive on Enable after a nine-month lay-off.

“I kind of looked after her for the first bit of the race – next time, if I take Ghaiyyath on, I’ll be a bit closer and make a race of it.

“The King George and the Arc have always been her targets, so I didn’t want to bottom her first time out against a very fit, good horse.”

What is surprising is that punters, minutes after the mare’s defeat, latched on to Love and made Saturday’s Oaks winner the 4-1 favourite for the Arc over Enable, now a 5-1 chance.

“I had to be careful, to make sure Enable came out of the race in good fettle,” added

Dettori. “Bouncing, instead of getting a knockout punch from a good horse and then not recover from it.”

In recent days Dettori had not enjoyed the roll of the dice. English King failed to come up to expectations in the Derby, finishing fifth, and Frankly Darling was never a serious player in the Oaks when taking third place.

Dettori said: “In the Derby I had a terrible draw and was always on the back foot, because he jumped left.

“I probably could have finished second if I’d got a better run. But we should take nothing away from the winner Serpentine as he was the best horse.”

■ PINATUBO, beaten in the 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes, is the 10-11 favourite for Sunday’s Jean Prat at Deauville.

■ DUAL Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo, trained by Willie Mullins, and Cyrname, under the care of Paul Nicholls, were the joint-highest-rated jumps horses of the 2019-20 season by Anglo-irish Jump Classifications.
