Allen Zooms in on title

- ALONSO BACK HOME ■ by PETER OAKES

FERNANDO ALONSO is set to make his return to Formula One with Renault in 2021.

The Spaniard, 39 this month, is heading back to the outfit where he won his two World Championships.

He is primed to replace Daniel Ricciardo, who is moving to Mclaren at the end of the year.

Alonso quit the sport after four seasons with Mclaren, setting his sights on becoming only the second driver since Britain’s Graham Hill to complete the Triple Crown of winning the Monaco Grand Prix, Le Mans 24 Hours and Indy 500.

He will partner the Frenchman Esteban Ocon at Renault.

OLIVER ALLEN is backing Great Britain to Zoom to their first world title in three decades.

He and joint manager Simon Stead have been holding fortnightly Zoom sessions with the entire Lions squad to keep everyone motivated for the restart of the international season.

GB haven’t been world champions since 1989 but Allen is convinced they are on track to end the lengthy wait at Belle

Vue in the Speedway of Nations World Final.

He said: “This year is the best chance we have had since then to win again.”

The SON event was postponed in May but has been pencilled in for the end of October.

■ champion Tai Woffinden, who has been leading the virtual get-togethers, and European Championship front-runner Robert Lambert, 22, are in brilliant form this season.

And Belle Vue’s Dan Bewley, 21, has the big advantage of racing on his home track in Manchester.

The trio are the only Brits currently in action while there’s no racing in the UK, as all have contracts with top-flight Polish sides.

Allen added: “Tai is one of the best riders in the world and Robert’s in the form of his life.

“And, at Belle Vue, there isn’t another Under-21 qualified rider in the world who we would pick ahead of Dan.”
