Ethan Pinnock’s late header completed the turnaround, after Said Benrahma’s second-half penalty cancelled out Macauley Bonne’s early opener.

The third-placed Bees moved back to within two points of the automatic promotion spots and boss Thomas Frank has fired a warning to their rivals.

He said: “It’s a big win and we know we need to go and win the next game.

Leeds to answer.

“Of course I will watch Derby against West Brom on Wednesday night, but that’s to West Brom and come up with an because we are playing them on Saturday. This win was big in terms of how we handled it, managed it and kept going.

“I was extremely happy when that winner went in.”

Charlton took shock lead with their first attack in the eighth minute.

The Addicks almost doubled their lead when Josh Cullen’s corner came back off the bar, before Jason Pearce’s rebound also rattled the woodwork. Brentford were camped in Charlton’s half after the restart and the visitors had keeper Dillon Phillips to thank for keeping their lead intact.

But they levelled 15 minutes from time when Cullen was penalised for a challenge on

Benrahma (inset) and the wing wizard dusted himself down to send Phillips the wrong way from the spot for his fourth goal in two games.

Benrahma was denied by Phillips before Josh Dasilva’s drive hit the post and they got the crucial second five minutes from time, Pinnock stooping to head in Dasilva’s cross.

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer said: “I thought it was tough. I think we were quite solid for a large part of the game.

“But we ran out of legs, there were too many on empty. We just couldn’t hold out for that precious point in the end.”
