NO BAIL FOR ‘SEX PREDATOR’ MAXWELL
GHISLAINE Maxwell was called “calculating and sadistic” as paedophile Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged “madam” before she denied bail by a US court last night.
Alleged victim Annie Farmer called the Brit a “sexual predator” who never showed any remorse.
Ms Farmer added: “She also has a demonstrated contempt for our legal system by committing perjury.”
Maxwell faces up to 35 years in jail if she is convicted over claims that she recruited teenage girls as young as 14 to be abused by her ex-lover Epstein between 1994 and 1997. Prosecutors say she took part in some of the sexual abuse. She denies all the allegations.
US District Judge Alison Nathan set Maxwell’s trial date for July 12, 2021, at the Manhattan federal court in New York.
The 58-year-old appeared via video link from Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where she will now be held until her trial.
Maxwell wanted to spend the pre-trial period in a luxury Manhattan hotel at her own expense.
But prosecutors claimed she was an “extreme risk of flight”, with the means to escape the country and
British and French passports. Defending Maxwell, lawyer Mark Cohen told the court “she’s not the monster” portrayed by the government.
He denied she had tried to flee the FBI when they arrested her on July 2.
Maxwell was charged with six crimes – four related to transporting minors for illegal sexual acts.
She is also charged with two counts of perjury for allegedly lying under oath.
Tycoon Epstein died in prison last August as he awaited his trial on sex trafficking charges.
