BOOKIES CASH ROW
Goodwood gamble’s not going to pay off
GOODWOOD racegoers fear Saturday’s return of crowds will be “soulless” amid a bookmakers row.
Some bookies are refusing to sign up because they are unhappy with only being able to make cashless transactions.
They say it takes too long to pay out on a win when reimbursing a punter’s credit.
The West Sussex racecourse is set to be the first to admit spectators after the pandemic. A Government crowd pilot scheme will see 5,000 punters attend on Saturday. But only four bookies are allowed in.
Racing fan Simon Nott said: “I think it would be good for racegoers to see how soulless a racecourse is with no bookmakers. I get the impression ★ that many tracks feel could do without them.”
Greg Harriott, one bookie attending on Saturday, added: “I’ve only agreed so that I can complain. For me, I think it’s vital we are adamant that cash poses no additional risk and they racecourses can’t change ring layouts or numbers!”
A Goodwood spokesman said: “The pilot event is about demonstrating we can operate safely within the guidelines.”
The decision to have cashless betting “is down to the venue”, a source confirmed.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport said: “We hope this will lead to fans returning to venues from October. We are working with sports and medical experts.” husband Wayne finished the football season with Derby. ★
