NAVY chiefs sparked fury by saying they’re ditching the term “seaman”.
They want to bring in the more gender-neutral “sailor” to replace it.
Part of the reason for the change is the word’s doubleedged meaning, according to naval bosses.
They hope axing it will boost sailors’ pride and help halt a recruitment slump.
The move was announced by the Royal Canadian Navy but could be adopted by other countries where “seaman” is currently deployed – including Britain.

Additional ranking terms, including “able”, “leading”, “ordinary” and “master” might also be dropped in favour of the more inclusive “first class” and “second class”.
Former sailors slammed the move online, branding it political correctness overkill.
But the Canadian Navy’s Rear-admiral Chris Sutherland hit back blasting the critics’ “hateful, misogynistic and racist beliefs”.
He said: “To those of you currently serving with these beliefs I would like to emphatically state you have no place in our navy.
“If you cannot live by or support the values of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, then you cannot defend them.
“I am shocked that you think your comments would be acceptable, and you are not able to recognise that those you are disparaging are the very people dedicating their lives to afford you the freedom to comment.’’
