Paceman in the spotlight I WANNA BE LIKE STU, JIMMY

“Now I’m 34 I feel fit. Post-lockdown my fitness testing was the best it has ever been.

“Jimmy is someone who I have watched very closely, a great friend of mine for many years, how he has maintained himself

“You look at both of our records over the last few years, we are actually improving.

“Why not try and follow in Jimmy’s footsteps?

“If I keep bowling the way I am for the next few years I wouldn’t rule anything out.”

IT was fitting that Stuart Broad sealed the Wisden Trophy win with his 10th wicket in the match and 501st of his career.

Man of the match and despite playing in only two games, he helped England secure the 2-1 win and provided the sort of drama that deserved a crowd to go with it.

But even though he didn’t have the same roar for his 10-67 as he did when he took 11121 at Chester-le-street in 2013, his previous 10-wicket haul, it was no less compelling.

With eight wickets required at the start of the day Broad captured the first to fall to reach the incredible milestone of 500 Test wickets. Amazingly, Kraigg Brathwaite was the 500th victim for James Anderson too back in 2017.

And there was Broad removing Jermaine Blackwood at the last to hammer home just why he was so unhappy to be left out of the first Test. In between, Chris Woakes took five wickets to remind everyone just how strong England’s pace bowling is right now. The 269run win was, in terms of runs, their biggest win ever over the Windies.

“I’m delighted point to prove, saying: “I couldn’t be more pleased about him backing it up.

“It is testament to how good a player he has been over a long period of time.

“It is a phenomenal achievement and sums Stuart up. He wants to be a part of those big moments and he makes things happen.

“He wants the ball when you’re up against it and he wants to change the momentum. He’s done it time and again and this the series,

Bowling: to have dressing room couldn’t be a better place right now for a young bowler to learn their trade.”

Strike partner Anderson added: “The way he has bowled in the two games has been phenomenal.

“It is a credit to himself and the work he has put in over the last few years.

“There is a very good chance he’ll get more wickets than me if he carries on like this.

“He can get as many wickets as he wants.” got those wickets, it was very special,” said Broad. “When you get milestones, you want to do it when you win the match and the series.

“I was frustrated in Southampton and I was really down that week but I’ve got some brilliant people around me and I knew I was bowling well.

“I got the answers and explanations I wanted but I was still disappointed not to make the team. I’m a competitive person and if I feel I have a point to prove, I will perform.”

When skipper Joe Root arrived back into the bubble in Manchester after the birth of his daughter he had plenty on his plate.

His team were 1-0 down, he had an angry Broad to deal with, and just hours before the game he found out that his fastest bowler had broken the bio-secure bubble.

But Root focused on the job out on the field, where England’s bowlers reigned supreme and their batsmen followed the blueprint.

This is the area where England need most work and it is improving with the young batsmen they have.

If Root himself can soar again with the bat in the same way that Broad and Anderson have done with the ball, the next two years could be huge.
