SIMON Cowell has already taken his first steps after six hours of surgery on his broken back.

The Britain’s Got Talent chief, 60, amazed docs by walking shortly after the complex operation.

And the workaholic music mogul is back to his old self – making phone calls, sending emails and “bossing about” girlfriend Lauren Silverman, 43.

Close pal and former flame Terri Seymour said: “He actually took a few steps. “He’s doing well and in good spirits. He is going to need a lot of physical therapy.” The X Factor judge was just a centimetre from severing his spinal cord after falling off his £5,000 electric bike while showing off to his son and stepson at his

Malibu mansion.

Terri, who works for US entertainment show Extra, confirmed that “part of his back was broken”.

She added: “It was 1cm away from his spinal cord – that is true. It’s bad and he is in agony. It could have been so much worse.”

And Terri, 48, revealed

New York socialite Lauren had told her: “He is definitely going to walk again.”

She added: “Poor Lauren has been amazing. She just told me he is already bossing her around. He is on his ipad making calls.

Typical Simon.” The star missed yesterday’s live show of America’s Got Talent – but Terri hinted he could be back soon.

She said: “You never rule anything out with Simon.”

Simon and Lauren have been overwhelmed by the care of doctors and nurses.

Terri added: “They have been amazing. I know they are both so thankful.”

And pals from across the showbiz wished Simon a speedy recovery. But 2004 X Factor winner Steve Brookstein, 51, could not resist a dig.

He said: “I heard Simon broke his back carrying One Direction for 10 years.”
