Henderson’s focus on future

- ■ by DAVID ANDERSON

JORDAN HENDERSON claims Liverpool need to keep winning trophies to be remembered as a truly great side.

The Reds skipper is not satisfied by their haul of the Champions League, Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup from the last 15 months and wants more.

Liverpool’s fabled sides of the 1960s, 70s and 80s won European Cups, league titles, FA Cups and League Cups by the lorry load and Henderson says Jurgen Klopp’s current team cannot stop now.

He said: “I still feel as though there’s a lot more to come from all of us and if we want to be one of the best teams, then you need to do it consistently,” said the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year.

“You can’t just do it for a few years and then that’s it. You need to keep going and going and going.

“I look at what a lot of ex-players who have won trophies have said that it’s hard to win one, but then it’s even harder to then win another one and keep it going.

“I can certainly see that and we understand that. It’s about doing what we’ve been doing for a long period of time and not getting carried away.”

Liverpool’s success over the last 15 months is already history for Henderson and his focus is on helping the Reds improve.

Despite their massive haul of 99 points to claim the Premier League, he insists they can still do better.

“What’s happened in the past is incredible, but it’s the past,” he said.

“You’ve always got to focus on what’s in front of you. For us, it’s about being better. When we just lost the title, I can remember the total points was 97 and everybody was saying, ‘Where are you going to go from here?

“Next season we finished with 99.

“So it’s about improving, it’s about being better and you can’t have any limits on that.

“We can be a lot better. Individuals can still get even better again.

“You’ve just got to keep giving absolutely everything, you’ve got to keep working harder than you ever have before, staying hungry.

“We’ve definitely got that mentality within this dressing room.”
