You’re Beautiful – James Blunt

It’s been a wedding first dance favourite – but this is not the romantic ditty you might think. It’s actually about a drug-crazed stalker, as Blunt explained.

He said: “It’s about a guy who’s high as a f***ing kite on drugs in the subway stalking someone else’s girlfriend when that guy is there in front of him.

“He should be locked up or put in prison for being some kind of perv.”

I Don’t Like Mondays – The Boomtown Rats

This song has a much darker meaning than someone not fancying work on a Monday.

Bob Geldof wrote it after hearing about a shooting at a children’s playground in 1979 by 16-year-old Brenda Spencer, who calmly said afterwards: “I don’t like Mondays. This livens up the day.”

Firework – Katy Perry

It appears to be an inspirational song about believing in yourself, but Firework is KP’S way of telling what she wants done with her body when she dies.

Katy, right, said: “I want to be put into a firework and shot across the sky as my last hurrah.”

Fight For Your Right – Beastie Boys

This party anthem is the group’s biggest song – but they intended it as a joke to mock the rock scene which they hated.

Instead those same people loved it. Furious, the band refused to play it live.

Born In The USA –

Bruce Springsteen

A favourite with American politicians and featuring a US flag on the cover, you might think this is one of the most patriotic songs recorded. But it is actually anti-usa. Springsteen said it’s about the government’s poor treatment of Vietnam veterans.

Summer Of 69 – Bryan Adams

Bryan would have been nine in the summer of 1969. Instead the song is a cheeky ode to the sex move of the same name.

He said: “There is a huge misconception that this song is about 1969. The reason I chose 69 is because of the sexual position.”

I Shot The Sheriff – Bob Marley

The lyrics appear to be about corruption and injustice – he killed the sheriff in self-defence and was falsely accused of offing the deputy.

But Bob’s ex-girlfriend Esther Anderson claims the song is about her use of birth control because he believed it was a sin.

Poker Face – Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga herself admitted this was inspired by her experience of being bisexual, telling fans it was about being with a man while fantasising about a woman – so he has to read her poker face.
