The scent she gives off can turn him on too, according to the research from Kent University. But what else do you stink you know about smells?

Human beings are able to detect one trillion different scents, according to research by Rockefelle­r University in the US. Each of us has six million odourdetec­ting cells.

Our sense of smell is best in our late teens. Women have a better sense of smell than guys – especially during pregnancy. Dogs have nearly 44 times more scent cells than humans. Some can smell things 40ft undergroun­d and in one experiment sniffed out whale poo floating a mile away.

But the African elephant is reckoned to have the best sense of smell in the animal kingdom. The beasts can detect a water source 12 miles off. Each human has their own distinct smell, like a fingerprin­t, and everything – from what we eat to our state of mind – can affect it. A 2012 study also found we can smell fear through people’s sweat.

We have a sense of smell in the womb before we are born and remember aromas better than sights. Around 85% of us recall childhood when we smell crayons. Our fave smell is that of freshlybak­ed bread, according to a poll, beating bacon and freshly- mown grass. Experts say animals have favourites too. Lions like mint, while camels favour tobacco.

The skunk, left, is reckoned to be the world’s stinkiest critter. Its sulphuric spray has a range of 10ft and can be picked up more than a mile away. Forget rotten eggs or fish. Scientists say the Vieux- Boulogne, the world’s smelliest cheese, has one of the worst pongs on the planet, while the durian fruit reeks so badly it’s banned in some places.

Body odour is caused by bacteria breaking down sweat into acid. BO and bad breath top lists for turn- offs among women and men.

But, according to one piece of research, women are turned on by scents such as petrol, leather and printer ink while men like the waft of lipstick and baby oil.

Coffee doesn’t taste like it smells because 300 of the 631 chemicals that combine to make its distinctiv­e aroma are destroyed by saliva. Farts in the shower smell worse because our noses work better in high heat eat and humidity. y. Amazingly, in medieval times, it was thought sniffing bottom burps could help cure the plague.

The most popular perfume of all time is reckoned to be Chanel No5, selling 10million bottles annually. Actress Marilyn Monroe said it was the only thing she wore in bed. Auto Trader recently brought out an Eau de New Car fragrance.

Loss of the sense of smell is known as anosmia. It’s one possible symptom of coronaviru­s, experts have said. For people suffering with cacosmia, nice scents, like fresh flowers, smell revolting.
