TOO FAT TO HIRE AIRBNB
Cottage ban for tubby tourists
AIRBNB hosts who banned guests over 16st from their historic cottage have been branded “fat- phobic”.
The couple – called Zsu and Marcus – claimed hefty holidaymakers could “seriously” damage ancient oak beams at their property.
The £ 199- a- night Bobbit’s Lair has since been removed from the bookings site by Airbnb bosses.
But activist Lindsay Mcglone, 22, now wants the owners kicked off the site for good.
She said: “They’re saying they don’t want fat people in their vicinity and they don’t want to take fat people’s money.
“It’s probably come from internalised fat- phobia and now they’re trying to justify it by saying they’ve got old oak in their house.”
The online advert for the property in Sandwich, Kent, barred visitors with “eating disorders”.
It said they didn’t want than average” people to protect the beams.
But campaigner Lindsay fumed: “That doesn’t take away from the fact
“bigger stay to
that they’re still being discriminatory. It’s trying to find a way to justify what they’ve said.
“It’s absolutely appalling.” Airbnb insisted “discrimination has no place in their community” and said that the property has been taken off the website fully. A spokesman for
the company said: “We enforce a strict non- discrimination policy and under our Open Doors initiative, if a guest feels they have been discriminated against we will provide personalised support to ensure they find a place to stay.”
