PRICE: WE HAVE A POINT TO PROVE

- By JULIE STOTT

SUPER LEAGUE opponents could be awarded a point apiece if their game falls foul of a Covid- 19 fixture pile- up.

Six clubs have had players test positive, with several games rearranged or postponed.

Clubs have vowed to do everything possible to finish the season.

But the positive tests, and self- isolation forced on other players, could soon wreak such havoc that it will be impossible to rearrange every fixture.

In that case, it looks likely that teams would be awarded a point each if their match is scrapped.

Warrington coach Steve Price ( right) believes clubs should do everything possible to keep matches going.

He said: “We have a responsibility to the game to try and keep it afloat. I would hate to see it come crashing down.”

Clubs can ask for a postponement if six or more players are unable to play, having had either a positive test or been put into self- isolation through test and trace. Wolves had seven players in that category last week, plus another four unavailable for other reasons, but played against Hull.

They won 37- 12 with a weakened team and will again be below strength for Thursday’s clash with Castleford.

Price said: “Our club put the game before itself, because we had every right to not play. The players deserve a big rap.”

Price admits, though, that there might come a point where clubs owe it to their players to call for a postponement or cancellation.

He added: “At the moment we can get by with the roster we have and keep playing on, but I’m just speaking on behalf of our club.

“But if they start cramming more games in, then I think it might be taxing on the welfare of the players.”

Wigan’s game at Catalans Dragons on Saturday – the first with a crowd allowed in – could now be at risk.

A Warriors player has tested positive and if that number rises, then the game in Perpignan may be postponed.
