HARRY’S HORROR

Broken leg ends season for young England star

-

But coach Richard Agar confirmed that the England starlet had broken his tibia and fibula and could miss the opening stages of next season.

He said: “We love him to bits and he is a great young player with the world at his feet, so it is a huge blow.”

X- rays are expected to reveal whether Newman needs to have the leg pinned or whether it will heal in a cast.

But Agar said they are expecting a lay- off between three and six months, adding: “You could hear him in a lot of distress from the stands. We’ll do our utmost to keep his spirits high and get him the best possible care.

“Typical of Harry, he gave the thumbs up to us in the stand. He is a great kid and a great player so it is difficult to see such a player cop such an injury.”

Newman has been tipped for great things since making his Rhinos debut three years ago as a 17- year- old.

Last year he made such a sensational impact that Leeds were happy to let captain and England star Kallum Watkins leave for the NRL midway through the season.

The England Knight’s star billing was backed up when national coach Shaun Wane named him in his first full international squad earlier this year.

Team- mates were visibly shocked by Newman’s first- half injury, with some later saying they heard a crack when he went down in an innocuous tackle.

But they recovered to steamroller Hull KR, making it successive heavy beatings for Rovers following last week’s Challenge Cup quarter- final.

Ash Handley, who moved from the wing into Newman’s centre position, scored two tries with Rhyse Martin adding a touchdown and six goals.

Leeds’ other try scorers were James Donaldson, Richie Myler, Alex Mellor and Luke Briscoe.

Rovers, who made 11 changes, scored through Jimmy Keinhorst, Ryan Brierley and Shaun Kenny- Dowall.
