Sub Williams keeps Wales flying

- By JAMES NURSEY

JONNY WILLIAMS smashed in his first international goal in the dying minutes to keep Wales top of their group.

The visitors dominated in Sofia but couldn’t find a breakthrough at the Vasil Levski National Stadium until Williams came off the bench.

The sub created a superb chance for Rabbi Matondo before finding the back of the net himself in the 85th minute.

He struck with a high near- post shot from man- of- the- match Neco Williams’ cross.

It means Giggs’ side stay top in Group B4 ahead of Finland, who visit Cardiff next month.

A small number of fans were allowed in but there was little excitement for them as Wales recorded their sixth successive competitive clean sheet.

But they were shot- shy without

WILL TO WIN: Williams joy after his winner scorer Gareth Bale plus Aaron Ramsey, Joe Allen, David Brooks and Hal Robson- Kanu.

Boss Giggs made four changes, with Kieffer Moore and midfielder Joe Morrell both suspended.

Luton defender Rhys NorringtonDavies, on loan from Sheffield United, made his debut at left wingback and Liverpool’s Neco Williams got his first start on the right.

It was a young line- up, with eight aged 22 or under. Bulgaria were in poor form after just one win in 18 games and it showed.

Wales made a bright start as defender Joe Rodon hooked an early effort over and Manchester United wideman Dan James also curled in a right- foot shot which keeper Nikolay Mihaylov saved.

Teen debutant Williams made some penetrating passes and his brilliant ball picked out Liverpool team- mate Harry Wilson but the winger was flagged offside.

Wilson did test Mihaylov with a second- half free- kick which the keeper pushed away.

Giggs threw on Matondo for James in a bid to fire up the visitors.

But the Schalke ace blew a great chance when he ballooned his leftrecord foot finish at the back post from fellow sub Williams’ cross.

Williams himself though made no mistake with a clinical finish.

It completed a gritty win for Wales, who had to replace injured keeper Wayne Hennessey with Adam Davies in the closing stages.

Wales play Ireland and then Finland next month in Cardiff.

The last game is likely to decide the group winners and promotion to a place among Europe’s elite.
