A real hum- singer!
WARBLE A TUNE... AND WILL NAME IT
GOOGLE Search users can now find out the name of a tune by humming it into the portal.
An update to the search engine uses its machine learning algorithms to help identify potential song matches.
The tech giant revealed the new feature at a virtual event about updates to its gateway, which is the most used around the world.
For mobile users, the new tool can be deployed by tapping the microphone icon in the search bar and asking “what’s this song?” before humming for 10 to 15 seconds.
Those with the Google Assistant on their device are able to ask “Hey Google, what’s this song?” and then hum it. In a blog post, Google said: “We all know how frustrating it is when you can’t remember the name of a song or any of the words but the tune is stuck in your head.
“Google can now help you figure it out – no lyrics, artist name or perfect pitch required.
“Each song’s melody is like its fingerprint with its own unique identity. We’ve built machine learning models that can match your hum, whistle or singing to the right ‘ fingerprint”,’ it said.
When users warble, Google’s machine learning models transform the audio into a number- based sequence, which is a representation of the song’s melody.
The company explained: “We compare these sequences to thousands of songs from around the world and identify potential matches in real time.” It also announced updates for Google Maps, including an expansion of its live busyness indicator to “millions” of new places.
Information about the health and safety precautions that companies are taking during the pandemic will also be provided.
And Google’s search engine now has the improved ability to understand misspelt words.
“One in 10 queries every day include a spelling mistake and the update makes a greater improvement to spelling than all of our improvements over the last five years”, the company said.
