SPOTLIGHT IS ON ME

Ole still the right man for United job

- by DAVID MCDONNELL

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER admitted all the pressure should be on him as he begins a run of games that will decide his Manchester United fate.

United have suffered two defeats in their first three Premier League games, leaving them down in 16th place.

The 6- 1 mauling at home to Tottenham was their biggest defeat for nine years, while talk of players losing faith in Solskjaer and skipper Harry Maguire’s alarming loss of form have added to the sense of crisis at United.

Now they face seven games in 21 days and Solskjaer said: “The spotlight should be on me because I’m the manager and I’m responsible.

“Last season was also hard, we only won two of the first nine games, which was difficult.

“But if you’re part of Manchester United, as a player or staff, you’re used to this and you have to be mentally strong. For me, this period is another chance to prove that.

“It’s about being focused for the next game because I know they’re capable of getting results.”

Bruno Fernandes was forced to deny a rift and dressing- room bust- up with Solskjaer after he was subbed at half- time during the Spurs defeat.

Solskjaer tried to create a siege mentality among his players by claiming: “We know, any little chance from outside, people want to create division.

“Bruno spoke really well about it the other day. We’re united and have to stay together.

“Bruno has lost two league games since he came here back in February. It’s been two in quick succession but he’s not used to losing league games.

“Welcome to Manchester United, Bruno, this is what happens. You’re everyone’s favourite target if something goes wrong.”

Meanwhile, United have triggered the one- year option on Paul Pogba’s contract.

The midfielder would have been out of contract at the end of this season but United exercised their extension option a fortnight ago to preserve the France star’s market value.

The 27- year- old has started all three of United’s Premier League games this season and is expected to keep his place for tonight’s trip to Newcastle.
