MPS beating booze ban at office bashes

REBEL MPS are beating the House of Commons’ bar shutdown by turning their offices into pubs – complete with optics.

Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle, inset, outlawed booze sales in Parliament in sympathy with Tier 3 pub closures.

But politicians have been stocking up their office fridges with beer and wine and throwing impromptu parties.

Commons officials have been told MPS are going to crazy lengths to replicate the atmosphere of the Strangers’ g Bar which shut last week.

A source said: “They want to go the whole ole hog – optics, bar ar games such as table e football, the works.’’

The speakeasies are being operated d in offices on the e edge of the Parliamentary iahere estate where their sessions are e less likely to be rumbled.

MPS are said to be furious at the ruling, partly because the House of Lords is still allowing alcohol to be sold.

A source said: “Given that Lindsay’s gone a bit over the top on this it’s hardly surprising some MPS are making sure they can get a drink in their own offices.

“After all, the Speaker has banned booze sales in the Commons but he hasn’t banned us drinking it.’’

It is not the first time MPS have been accused of getting round booze restrictions. Three weeks ago when Commons’ bars were supposed to shut at 10pm, like all English pubs, a whistleblower claimed Health Secretary Matt Hancock was spotted with around 20 other MPS drinking in the Commons’ Smoking Room at 10.25pm after a vote.
