Buddy fan has it right, I grew up in the east end just as the war finished, I remember going to school with cardboard in my shoes, most of my clothes came from jumble sales or handouts from neighbours whose kids had out grown them, my parents had nothing. Like many others lived on whatever food we could afford and even that was rationed, but the one thing we did have was a community spirit today’s younger generation cannot even imagine.
