THE maker of sex drug Viagra raised excitement for millions yesterday when it unveiled a Covid- 19 vaccine that’s said to be 90% effective.

THE world was rejoicing last night after a coronavirus vaccine was shown to be 90% effective.

Viagra makers Pfizer said it was set to distribute 10million doses of the drug to the UK by the end of the year.

The news was hailed as “great day for science and humanity” as it gave the hope that we will be able to get back to some form of normality by the early months of 2021.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “The Pfizer/ Biontech vaccine has been tested on over 40,000 volunteers and interim results suggest it is proving 90% effective at protecting people against the virus.

“But we haven’t yet seen the full safety data, and these findings also need to be peerreviewed. So we have cleared one significant hurdle but t there are several more to go o before we know the vaccine can be used.”

Phase three of Pfizer’s trial involved 43,538 participants from six countries. They were given two doses of either the immunisation or a placebo, with 90% protected from the virus within 28 days of having

their jabs jabs. Only 94 people who took part in the trial developed Covid and no serious safety concerns were reported, the US pharmaceutical firm said.

Chairman Dr Albert Bourla said: “Today is a great day for science and humanity.

“We are a significant step closer to providing people with a much- needed breakthrough to help bring an end to this global health crisis.”

The vaccine is one of around 12 in the final stages of testing.

A government spokesman said it is “optimistic” but that “there are no guarantees”.

When the NHS is ready to roll it out, priority will be given to those who live and work in care homes, followed by the clinically vulnerable.

UK deaths from Covid have risen by 194 to a total of 49,238.

There have been 1,213,363 confirmed Covid cases to date.
