GREAT BRIT SEALS HIS PLACE AS TRUE LEGEND

- By JEREMY CROSS

LEWIS HAMILTON now has no equal in the history of Formula One.

The lad from Stevenage has done what few human beings get to do in their lives – he has achieved his lifelong dream and become the greatest driver of all time.

The record books prove it, with Hamilton’s triumph at the Turkish Grand Prix confirming his seventh world championship.

He is level with Michael Schumacher, but has secured more race wins, pole positions and podium finishes in his now iconic career.

As he pulled into the pit lane in Istanbul after taking the chequered flag, Hamilton took a moment to sit in his car and shed some tears of happiness beneath his helmet.

This was his personal nirvana, the realisation of his ultimate ambition and one he’s been on a mission to accomplish since being a little kid.

“That is for all kids out there who dream the impossible,” he said. “You can do it too, man.”

What Hamilton has done takes character, determination, dedication and a huge amount of talent – and if one race summed up how gifted he is at what he does, it was this one.

TEARS OF A CROWN: Hamilton tries to take in his achievement

While other cars spun in the rain, Hamilton, who started in sixth place, cruised through the field despite being on dead tyres near the end.

He even over- ruled team instructions to pit stop. Nothing could stop him.

Hamilton didn’t have the best car this weekend but he showed once again he was the best driver and should now be regarded as the greatest to ever sit behind the wheel.

Some people find him hard to like.

The ‘ Marmite Man’ has made us cringe at times with some of his social media postings.

And claiming to want to ‘ save the planet’ when he has a jet- set lifestyle and earns his living driving a car that burns fuel for fun is nothing short of laughable.

But when it comes to sporting achievement, there is no debate to be had. Hamilton has put the ‘ great’ into Great Britain.

He deserves our ultimate respect and should be knighted for his achievements, because legends like him don’t come along too often.
