Bump replaces mistletoe kiss

PEOPLE should be elbowbumping under the mistletoe this year, an expert has said.

Jonathan Briggs reckons that, or air kissing, is the only way to safely mark Christmas in the pandemic.

He said that because of household restrictions there’s a real problem with the usual kissing tradition.

Jonathan, who runs the Mistletoe Matters consultancy, warned: “It is not going to be hung up in pubs and restaurants and at office parties.

“One of the biggest problems is that people kiss under it and it’s likely you cannot kiss someone under it from outside your bubble. And the whole point of it is you kiss someone under it from outside your family.

“Could there be alternatives? Air kisses under the mistletoe, elbow bumps under the mistletoe.

“It is going to be really interesting to see what happens or does not happen. It could be mistletoe skips a year.”

His comments come as the UK’S biggest mistletoe sell- off has been scrapped because of social distancing issues and that means shops across Britain could struggle to get their hands on any. It happens in Tenbury Wells, Worcs – the country’s mistletoe growing heartland – every December. Organisers from the town said: “Due to Covid- 19, we regret to confirm that there will not be any mistletoe sales this year.” The Tedbury Mistletoe Association added: “It is with sadness, however not surprising, we are not holding the Mistletoe Festival this year due to the ongoing pandemic.”
