THE origins of Scotch eggs are disputed – but none have anything to do with Scotland! Some people say they were invented at posh London department store Fortnum & Mason in 1738, while some say they originated in Whitby during the 19th century, where they were made with fish instead of sausage meat. But they could also have more a more exotic heritage, as there is a similar dish in Indian cuisine.

THE name is thought to have come from the process used to make them. As they were cooked over an open flame, it’s thought they were called “scorch” eggs at first. But the name could also be inspired by a culinary process called “scotching” which meant mincing meat.

THERE are several local variations aof the snack in the UK. The Manchester Egg uses a pickled egg gg wrapped in a mixture of pork meat eat and Lancashire black pudding, while hile the Worcester Egg uses an egg pickled kled in Worcesters­hire sauce and covered ered in a mixture of local sausage meat and white pudding.

THE most expensive Scotch egg cost £ 500 and was served at a restaurant in Kensington, west London, in 2012. It contained a rare hen’s egg, edible 24- carat t gold leaf and wild salmon.

THE humble Scotch egg has become an unlikely hit food for 2020.

As we revealed yesterday, purchases of the snacks have soared fourfold in the past month alone. Undeterred by lockdown, people have been ordering them to their homes using the Deliveroo app, with most sales coming from customers in Bristol, Plymouth and Bournemout­h. THE Guinness World Record for largest Sc Scotch egg is held by Cl Clarence Court and Lee Str Streeton, who made it in Lon London in 2008. It weighed 6.2 6.2kg and included a 1.7kg ostr ostrich egg, 4kg of sausage mea meat, 940g of haggis and 800g of breadcrumb­s – taking 90 m minutes to boil the egg!
