Comic turn for Minchin
The Aussie songwriter has just released his first album of “straight” songs, Apart Together and his fans are going to have to get used to not laughing so much.
Tim explained: “I’ve always gone: ‘ Aw, I suppose I’m sort of comedy and can’t really write pop songs’. I’ve always not been quite sure what I am...
“I’m a Grammy- nominated songwriter and I’m still not known as a songwriter, I’m known as a f*** ing comedian.
“Jesus, I’ve spent the last 20 years trying to be un- pigeonholeable and then whingeing when I don’t get the pigeonhole I want.”
Tim’s new songs have their tongue- in- cheek moments, but otherwise he’s just writing music for pleasure, after all, even comedians aren’t funny all the time.
He explained: “The times change and what people find funny changes and with a few notable exceptions, most comedians have a shelf life, because people go: ‘ Right, we’ve seen that. We thought it was funny, we’re

“This record is saying: ‘ Look, I’ll keep hopefully being entertaining and quirky and making you laugh, but my concerts aren’t meant to be stand- up shows. There might be a whole period where I’m not asking you to laugh at all.
“As I get older, and it gets a bit tiresome to hear me rhyming about sex and Jesus, to be like: ‘ Yeah, but I’ve got other ways of expressing myself and other things to say.’”
And whatever reaction Tim gets he’s just relieved he’s finally taken the plunge and made the record he’s always dreamed of making.
“The weirdest thing about my career is that I’ve been writing songs since I was 12 years old and I’ve never made a studio album, but I got around to fixing it.”

PREGNANCY inspired
new solo song. Travelling Light premieres tomorrow on Youtube and she revealed: “It’s about changing, pushing through the darkness into the light.
“Ironically, I wasn’t travelling light when I wrote it. I was seven- months’ pregnant, carrying an eight- pound baby walking up four flights of stairs to get to the studio.”
It features on episode three of her Rainbow Woman show where Geri reveals her horse Beauty was behind last year’s reunion: “When I found Beauty, I got my courage back. Stepping out on stage with the Spice Girls again. I felt: ‘ You know what? It’s alright’. And I think Beauty taught me that.”
