AN Arctic blast will hit this week – sending temperatures plunging and snow falling in the north.

The mercury will drop to 0C in Scotland by Wednesday as the big freeze arrives.

Meanwhile, icy rain will lash the north- west with forecasters warning of snow flurries.

Met Office forecaster John Hammond said: “Arctic air will bring lower temperatures from midweek, with snow likely in the North in particular.”

Forecaster Paul Michaelwaite warned: “Colder air will start to tuck in behind the front, bringing the wet weather as it starts to make its move, which means some snow is possible up over the high ground before it clears.”

And there will be no into December either.

Families will be in “for a shock” as we endure the coldest winter since the early 2010s.

Leon Brown, the head of meteorological operations at The Weather Company, said: “People will get a shock after recent mild winters.

“It looks like a close call for this winter to be 0.3C below average, which would make it the coldest winter since the early 2010s.

“A colder- than- average December is favoured, with Arctic influxes from the north- west of

Scotland let- up due to the jet stream’s position. And - 10C in Scotland and - 5C in England is expected, with snow in the North including to lower levels at times, and a risk in the South.” BOOKIES Ladbrokes have slashed the odds for a White Christmas.

Having been a 5- 4 shot last week, the bookies have cut odds to just 10- 11 for snowfall on Christmas Day in any part of Britain.

Spokesman Alex Apati said: “Punters dreaming of a white Christmas look destined to get their wish later this year as we strap ourselves in for a recordbreaking cold winter ahead.”
