After winning Favourite Male Artist, Favourite Album and Favourite Song in the Soul/ R& B categories, he dedicated his success to a late legend: “Last time I received this award, it was given to me by the late great Prince.

“He’s the reason I get to constantly challenge the genre of R& B, and I’d like to dedicate this award to him.”

SHE won the prestigious Artist Of The Year but Taylor Swift had a good excuse for not attending the AMAS. The singer, who also nabbed Music Video Of The Year and Favourite Pop/ Rock Female Artist, revealed in a video message: “I’m actually recording all of my old music in the studio where we originally recorded it. So it’s been amazing and I can’t wait for you to hear it.”

The statement comes after Taylor revealed her master recordings had been sold to investment fund Shamrock Holdings for £ 227million.

She vowed to re- record her first six albums to take back ownership, teasing: “It has already proven to be both exciting and creatively fulfilling. I have plenty of surprises in store.” Taylor’s American Music Awards haul now stands at 32.
