SINGLE MINDED

Brad so glad he’s finishing tough year in Grand way

- By JULIE STOTT

BRAD SINGLETON vowed to stay positive after his world collapsed this year with the Toronto Wolfpack fiasco.

With no club and no wage, Singleton, 28, admits it was hard accepting handouts from his parents and in- laws just to feed his family.

That’s why the thought of playing for Wigan in Friday’s Grand Final at the KCOM Stadium in Hull against St Helens is still mind- blowing.

Singleton, who was signed by the Warriors in September, said: “I’ve been a bit overwhelmed with it all and I have to pinch myself that this is happening.

“I tried to stay positive when I was in the middle of it all and in limbo and focus on keeping my family in a good place. My partner Jade has been a rock.”

But the father- of- two added: “We did get some financial support off my family and Jade’s parents and I’m so grateful to them because that helped take some of the strain off.”

Singleton won two Grand Finals during a glittering nine- year career with Leeds but left Headingley for the challenge of helping new Super League side Toronto.

But in February, after just games, he was ruled out for months due to knee surgery.

Wages started to be paid late and eventually weren’t paid at all with four four controversial owner David Argyle then walking away in July, just days before the season restart.

Wolfpack lost their Super League status, leaving Singleton fearful for his future until Wigan stepped in with a three- year deal.

He said: “I am just grateful that I’ve joined such an impressive squad. We’ve got so many class players and good young lads in abundance.

“It’s all worked out for me but I think it’s a crime what’s happened with Toronto. I understand that David Argyle was probably not the best bloke and he still owes me money.

“But to rule out expanding in Canada is naive and short- sighted. There is a proven interest as they were getting 10,000 crowds.”

Friday’s final sees

Wigan skipper Sean O’loughlin bring the curtain down on a stellar career and Singleton says Wigan are desperate to send him out on a high.

He said: “He’s not flash but when he speaks he nails it and players listen as he has got that aura. I just hope he finishes in the best possible way.”
