GOAL- INTON

Striker seals a dramatic win

- ■ by PAUL BROWN

WILFRIED ZAHA cannot return quickly enough for Crystal Palace, who look lost without him.

Late goals from Callum Wilson and Joelinton pinched the three points for Steve Bruce’s side.

Even when the Eagles’ star man Zaha isn’t playing, he’s the story, because they just can’t score without him.

He missed his second game in a row as he remains in isolation after testing positive for coronavirus.

In his absence Roy Hodgson’s side were lifeless and they have now won only two of their last 17 league games without him.

Newcastle started the game as the most shot- shy team in the division but they promised to pack more of a punch with Callum Wilson back from a hamstring injury.

Scott Dann did well to intercept a cross from Wilson to strike partner Joelinton and in the same attack the Brazilian fired a header wide.

They may have left their shooting boots at home but it was all Newcastle, and you could see the frustration grow in the Palace dugout.

They were trying to bounce back after a demoralising defeat at Burnley but they were in first gear for too long.

It was left to Eberechi Eze to get Palace going, forcing Karl Darlow into a flying save.

That sparked the home side to life and Darlow saved from Jeff Schlupp as another first half went by without Newcastle scoring – that’s 20 of their last 26 in the top flight now. The home side came flying out of the blocks after the break with Gary Cahill heading over and Jordan Ayew going close. Wilson met a Javier Manquillo cross with a header which looped just past the far corner but you just could not see a goal coming.

Then came punches.

Wilson was played in by Joelinton against the run of play, and the England striker buried an effort past Vicente Guaita.

And it got even better for Newcastle when Joelinton netted a minute later. the late
