ONLY 4 INCHES!
But a bigger dump of snowflakes is set to fall, say experts
A BIG freeze has begun after parts of the UK woke up to four inches of snow – with experts predicting a 7in dump before the weekend.
Temperatures plummeted as northern England was blasted by the white stuff – with North Yorkshire bearing the brunt. And London has a 36% chance of snow today.
The Met Office has issued three weather warnings for flurries and ice with the UK set for more wintry conditions.
Scotland will be hit hardest with the west coast, the Highlands and parts of the central belt blanketed in 7in over the next two days.
Met Office meteorologist Dan Suri said: “It’ll certainly feel more wintry this week, with colder weather bringing a risk of frost, ice and wintry showers.
“The risk of snow accumulating is largely confined to the northern half of the UK – mainly over higher ground in Scotland, Wales and northern England.”
But Jim Dale, at British Weather Services, said “the polar front is looming southwards” with the cold carrying on throughout the country. He added: “This is an Arctic plunge, and we expect to see temperatures temperat
dip to - 8C in the Scottish Highlands with lows below freezing widely across the rest of the country.
“Over the next few days any snow events will extend southwards, although across higher ground.
“Cyclonic conditions to the east and high pressure to the west will funnel cold air in from the north.”
Bookies have slashed odds that Britain will have its coldest December on record from 5/ 4 to evens.
