BALLS TO NEW CRICKET LINGO

Batsmen out as terms hit for six

- By JERRY LAWTON

CRICKET batsmen are set to be simply called “batters” in a gender-equality drive.

The move is one of a series of changes planned for new tournament The Hundred, which hopes to attract a wider audience to the game – including more women.

Consultants believe the term “batsmen” should be hit for six as female teams will also be taking part.

The traditional fielding position of “third man” could also be on borrowed time.

And it is feared “cow corner” – used to describe a fielding position – could be banned to avoid upsetting people who don’t eat meat.

Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan said it will be a nightmare for commentators who are bound to slip-up.

Pundit Vaughan, 46, said: “We have not been told yet what we can or can’t say by the BBC.

Secure

“We’ve not been given a manual so we will have to wait and see. But it will be hard not to make slip-ups.

“My worry is what next? Will cow corner be banned so as not to upset vegans?”

“Cricket has to be careful not to alienate them too much by changing too many things for the sake of it and risk it becoming a laughing stock.”

The Hundred, due in July, has already scrapped traditional six-ball overs.

Instead there will be 10 balls from an end, delivered by one or two bowlers.

Sources say no phrases will be banned for commentators from Sky Sports and the Beeb – the two broadcasters to secure

rights to the tournament. A spokesman for the tournament, which will feature England ace Ben Stokes, said: “We want The Hundred to open cricket up to more people.

“We’re discussing ways of explaining the game.”
