LAID LOWE Jamal strike a sickener for Wednesday

JAM SESSION: Swansea’s Jamal Lowe fires the opener past Keiren Westwood

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY boss Darren Moore insists they will keep fighting even though logic suggests they are doomed.

Wednesday remain seven points adrift of safety with just five games remaining after suffering their 10th loss in 13 games to promotion-chasing Swansea.

Yet a defiant Moore, who only returned from a bout of coronavirus on Monday, said: “I can understand the logic, but we have to go with the numbers while they are still there for us.

“I won’t get distracted by thinking about anything else while the numbers are still there – and while they are still there, we will keep battling.

“We won’t feel sorry for ourselves, not in our make-up.”

Wednesday look destined to be relegated to the third tier for the fourth time in their 154-year history and have managed just seven points from 39. They were comit’s petitive against Swansea at Hillsborough, but lacked quality at both ends.

Swans goalkeeper Freddie Woodman touched Liam Shaw’s shot around the post in their best effort on goal but they did not create enough decent openings.

Wednesday’s defending for Swansea’s opener in the 31st minute was awful and they never recovered from that self-inflicted wound.

Barry Bannan played Tom Lees into trouble and he was outmuscled too easily by Andre Ayew, who centred for Jamal Lowe to slot home his 12th goal of the campaign for the Swans.

Keiren Westwood denied Ayew a second when he came quickly off his line to deny the Swansea striker. But there was nothing he could do to prevent the second in the 73rd minute.

Connor Roberts made an instant impact after coming on to whip over a cross from the left for Jay Fulton to head home.

Swansea were comfortable winners and boss Steve Cooper hopes their second straight win means they are back on track following their four successive losses.

They are seven points off Watford in second and Cooper refuses to give up hope of catching them.

“We are certainly chasing,” he said. “While there’s a chance, it gives you hope and when there’s hope you keep going.”

Cooper also said he does not know when Ben Cabango will return after axeing him for breaking coronavirus restrictions.

“A lesson needs to be learned quickly, not just about adhering to Covid restrictions, but what it means to be a 24/7 professional athlete,” he said.
