Red machine fails to fire again

fielder Mahmoud Dahoud who snatched at his 20-yard effort, sending it straight at City keeper Ederson.

But the hosts took the lead in the 15th minute, Erling Haaland making a superb run in behind John Stones before laying the ball off to Dahoud, whose first-time shot was blocked.

The ball span into the path of Bellingham, who took one touch before opening up his body and producing a composed finish into the top-right corner.

At 17 years and 289 days, midfielder Bellingham became the youngest Englishman to score in the Champions League.

City refused to panic and began to play their way back into the game.

De Bruyne smacked the bar with a ferocious strike in the 25th minute after showing great tenacity to win back the ball.

The Belgian playmaker then tried to catch out Dortmund keeper Marwin Hitz with an angled free-kick just before the half-hour mark, but Marco Reus was alert enough to head the ball clear.

City came close again two minutes later, Bellingham the hero at the other end, keeping out a Mahrez effort with a goal-line clearance.

Dortmund survived the first-half onslaught but it was only seven minutes into the second when Emre Can conceded a penalty for handling in the box.

When the original decision was verified by VAR, Mahrez stepped up three minutes later to sweep the ball into the net from the spot, to level on the night aggregate.

Mats Hummels came close to restoring Dortmund’s lead in the 69th minute but his header hit the bar.

De Bruyne had a shot saved by Hitz but there was no chance of him keeping out Foden’s stunner which went in off the inside of the post with 15 minutes to go.

And City strolled to the finish line to book their semi-final place. and put

City ahead on

DORTMUND (4-3-3): Hitz 6; Morey 5 (Tigges 81), Akanji 6, Hummels 7, Guerreiro 6; Bellingham 8 (Brandt 80), Can 6, Dahoud 7 (Hazard 75, 6); Knauff 6 (Reyna 68, 6), Haaland 6, Reus 7.

whistle. Mo Salah should have pulled one back within two minutes, too.

A ball across from Sadio Mane was waiting for the Egyptian to slot home.

But he directed the ball straight at Thibaut Courtois, who was grateful for the lack of ruthlessness from the Liverpool marksman.

Milner’s inclusion may have been to bring some steel to the Reds’ midfield. And the veteran forced Courtois into a fine stop with a curling effort.

Liverpool will have wanted Anfield full last night. If it was then it would have been rocking after this start.

Real looked a bit stunned. This wasn’t the passive side which let them control the game last week.

But the Spanish giants did show their threat on the counter when Karim Benzema broke free of Nat Phillips and saw his shot deflect off Ozan Kabak and hit the post after he latched on to a long ball.

Liverpool still flooded forward but wasteful passes in the final third hurt them. They did have two chances before the break but Salah and then Gini Wijnaldum squandered them. The latter from the Dutchman was the worst.

The stats at the break were quite damning for Liverpool after all their pressure, with just two shots on target.

They needed to be clinical after the break but the second half started like the first with a chance for the Reds.

This time it was a tricky one for Roberto Firmino but Courtois easily saved his shot.

The fizz and franticness of the Reds soon started to wane so Klopp turned to Thiago and Diogo Jota.

And it Real who had a great chance to seal the tie when Vinicius Jnr was put through but his first touch was heavy.

LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Alisson 7; Alexander-arnold 8, Phillips 6, Kabak 7 (Jota 60, 6), Robertson 7; Wijnaldum 7, Fabinho 7, Milner 7 (Thiago 60, 6); Salah 6, Firmino 6 (Shaqiri 82), Mane 6 (Oxlade-chamberlain 82).
