SUGGS REVEALS HOW POTTY HIS BAND WERE

destroyed his lounge trying to keep fit during lockdown.

Rather than bake bread, the Madness singer got into shape, but it backfired when he started using items around the home as exercise equipment.

He explained: “I was trying to order some weights but there was a six months waiting list and my daughter said: ‘I have this online thing you wanna watch – you can do it with household implements. You put baked bean tins down your socks and do leg exercises.’

“I found two tins of paint in the garage and a chair leg. I was in my underpants and I’d had a couple of gin and tonics so I said: ‘Have a look at this.’

“One tin fell off and exploded all over the living room and the

other tin – I lost my balance and that went all over the other side of the living room. That was the highlight of my lockdown.”

Fortunately he had something else to focus on – a new BT TV docu-series about the band, called Before We Was We.

Launching the Madness show at a virtual premiere this week Suggs said: “It was the 40th anniversary of our first record and we thought about doing something about us before we were successful. All the band members get to say their bits and contradict each other.”

I’ve seen the first episode and it’s a great look at a very different 70s London when their lives revolved around pubs.

Bandmate Chrissy Boy laughed: “If someone told me: ‘In the future you’ll be dragged around places buying coffee for £3,’ I’d be like: ‘Get out.’”

It’s packed with brilliant tales of their scallywag youth, when they stole outboard motors from moving trains and once broke into singer Lynsey de Paul’s home – although many band members have forgotten what went on.

Chrissy added: “Most of them couldn’t remember that we went to America in 1979. Nor that we did (telly show) Magpie.”

Suggs missed that first TV gig: “That was the first time I realised there were two 4 o’clocks in one day.”

● Catch the first episode for free on BT’S Youtube channel on May 1, then the rest of the series on AMC and BT TV.
