BROKE CAROL’S ‘BLEAK FUTURE’

- ■ by JERRY LAWTON jerry.lawton@dailystar.co.uk

THE desperate widow of football maverick Frank Worthington says she will have to sell their home and claim Universal Credit.

Carol, 62, said she faces a “terribly bleak” future after going bankrupt and having nursed her late husband through prostate cancer and dementia.

Flamboyant former England striker Frank died in hospital last month aged 72. His funeral was held in Halifax, West Yorks, yesterday. In his career he played for clubs including Huddersfield and Leicester before two stints on loan in the US.

But Carol said: “Frank had been declared bankrupt after returning from playing in America when he was landed with a big, unpaid tax bill.

“After money stopped coming in I was made bankrupt as well. Everyone was chasing us for money, but with sickness and other benefits we just about managed to pay the interest on the mortgage.

“When Frank’s illness got particularly bad over the last five years I became his full-time carer, but now he has gone that income has stopped.”

Carol, who lived with Frank in their Huddersfield home for 25 years, said: “I can’t pay the mortgage so I have got to sell up.

“I’m applying for Universal Credit and hopefully I can get benefits to pay my rent somewhere.

“But the future looks terribly bleak. I desperately need help.’’ A Justgiving page has been set up to raise money for both Carol – his wife of 35 years – and dementia charities, with 90% of the final total set to go to charity.
