GREEN GREEN CLASS HOME OF

Mason continues to grow as he sees off stubborn Clarets

- ■ by GIDEON BROOKS

IF it has proved a difficult second full season for Mason Greenwood at least the young striker is finishing it strongly.

Two goals here and a hand in a third helped Manchester United ease past gritty Burnley and cement Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s grip on second place in the table.

They were his fourth and fifth goals in the last six games after a barren run which stretched over 15 matches from January to March.

And they were hits which showed, while he may have lost his form, he has not lost his eye for goal.

It is easy to forget Greenwood is yet to pass his 20th birthday, so much has he packed into his United career to date. Yet after exploding on to the scene last season, this campaign has been disappointing.

Getting sent home from England duty in Iceland in September for breaching team protocols appeared to derail him.

But his recent run of goals, taking him to nine for the season, suggests he is back on track at a crucial stage of the season with a Europa League trophy to shoot at and second place to secure.

Victory for Solskjaer’s side saw them stretch their lead over thirdplaced Leicester to 10 points having played a game more.

With six games to go they would be disappointed not to stay in front from here.

Edinson Cavani added a third in injury-time as United took time to dismantle the evercompact Burnley.

The Clarets will have felt a weight lift from their shoulders following Arsenal’s late equaliser against Fulham.

Six points clear of trouble and with two games in hand, a fifth consecutive season in the top flight looks assured.

They very nearly enjoyed a dream start here, too, Chris Wood heading in Matt Lowton’s cross with United keeper Dean
