GREAT BRIT GOLD RUSH

King John’s treasure ‘buried in town’

- by JERRY LAWTON

TREASURE dumped by evil King John could be under what is now a Grimsby housing estate. Time to change the name to Grinsby!

GRIMSBY could be the centre of a gold rush – after a historian revealed long-lost crown jewels could be buried there.

A new book claims King John arranged for his men to hide his gold, silver and gemstones under ancient Wellow Abbey for safekeeping as he fled his enemies in October 1216.

Cowardly John was cruel and greedy and the haul, which has never been recovered, would be priceless.

The monastery closed in 1536, was later demolished and its site covered by a housing estate. Historian James Wright said locals living in roads such as Wellowgate, Abbey Road and Abbey Drive in Grimsby could unearth the treasure while digging in their gardens.

An archaeological investigation could yield riches “beyond imagination”.

The historian said:

“Most of the robes, silks and tunics would have long since disintegrated. Likely to have survived would be sceptres, wands, swords, crosses and chalices – all made from gold – plus crown jewels and rings. “There may also have been the regalia of John’s grandmother, including a great crown.”

A NEW claim from historian James Wright suggests King John’s treasure could be buried under terraced houses in Grimsby.

Stranger things have happened. Everyone thought the group who dug up the Leicester car park looking for Richard III were mad.

And then his bones appeared under the asphalt!

Grimsby has long been associated with the fishing industry.

But if this turns out to be right, the town could be the next gold rush destination.

Flocks of people would head to the Lincolnshire coast seeking their fortune.

They might not find King John’s treasure.

But at least there are some good fish and chip shops!
