BILLY THE KID CAN SHOOT TO PROMINENCE

-

FULL OF PROMISE: Scotland’s rising star Billy Gilmour

CHELSEA starlet Billy Gilmour has taken a big step towards making an impact at the Euros.

Scotland boss Steve Clarke has told the teenage rookie he’s “done himself no harm” since making his debut against Holland last week.

Clarke will go for experience in his starting line up in Scotland’s first game in a finals tournament for 23 years against Czech Republic next Monday.

But Gilmour showed ■ by SIMON BIRD enough dribbling power or creative composure against Luxembourg, his second cap, to earn praise from the former Chelsea coach.

Gilmour, 19, even survived being smashed by a brutal challenge during a 31-minute cameo on Sunday evening, bouncing back without injury.

Clarke said: “Billy is fine. He came off the bench and looked good and did himself no harm.”

Scotland’s players have been given until tomorrow night off and told to see their families, not go out on the town. They will meet at their Rockliffe Park Euro base, Middlesbrough’s luxury hotel and training ground.

Clarke is wary of another player catching Covid after John Fleck’s positive. Fleck will join up with the squad after his quarantine period this week but won’t play in the first game.

Clarke (inset) said: “It’s safe for them to go home and spend time with their families. We don’t expect to see any of them going out and about.

“We had six out of the Netherlands game last week, so they know how close Covid still is. “Since the start, when we brought football back, we have preserved the security around the Covid bubble. What happened last week was an early reminder Covid was there.”
