Clarke side’s Scot real firepower says Adams

- By MICHAEL GANNON

CHE ADAMS insists Scotland boast the firepower to shoot their way out of the group stage at the Euros and into the Hampden history books.

The Southampton striker will be out to gun down Czech Republic on Monday when Steve Clarke’s side begin their campaign.

Adams, who scored his second goal in just four international games in Sunday’s 1-0 friendly win over Luxembourg, admits the Scots should have slammed in more goals.

But he’s in bullish mood and is convinced Scotland have the quality to break new ground by reaching the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time.

Adams said: “We have a good enough team and squad to let everyone know we are there to win games and not just be a part of it. “We can make history.

“It looks a difficult group but it’s all about momentum in these competitions. If you win one, who knows what could happen?

“We have to build ourselves up in the right way and go out and show people what we can do.

“Will we be daunted? No, not really. With the squad we’ve got here everyone is a good player and everyone knows how to play football and knows their responsibilities. That’s massive going into any game.

“And everyone is so close. It makes you want to play for the lads even more and for the manager.”

Adams returned to action having missed out on the draw against Holland after John Fleck’s positive Covid-19 case saw him among six players left behind as a precaution.

Scotland managed to contain any outbreak but other nations are struggling, with Adams saying: “Covid protocols are something every team at the Euros has to factor in before and throughout the tournament. We’re used to it now.

“Obviously when we discovered John tested positive the medical team carried out a risk assessment and explained the situation.

“Even though there’s a disappointment in not being able to play a part in a match everyone wants to impress in, the overriding concern was not taking any unnecessary risks in travelling.

“Thankfully those who didn’t travel got an opportunity against Luxembourg and getting a goal was a great bonus for me.”

Adams and QPR’S Lyndon Dykes have formed a promising partnership in attack and the 24-year-old will be ready if Clarke unleashes the duo.

Adams added: “We both play with two up front at club level so it’s something we are familiar with.

“A few years ago I played with a striker called Lukas Jutkiewicz, who was good in the air and with flick ons and stuff, and he’s similar to Lyndon. It can work quite well.”
