Beaumont vows to fight on after academy snub
LEIGH owner Derek Beaumont considered quitting the sport last month – but has now refocused on defying the odds to keep the Centurions in Super League.
Beaumont was left “flabbergasted” by the RFL’S decision to deny the club the ability to run an elite academy after a comprehensive application.
But after a period of reflection, the 50-year-old is now determined to steer the winless Centurions away from the foot of the table.
“I love this club passionately and deeply,” said Beaumont (above).
“I love what it provides for the community and the opportunities it provides within it.
“It is steeped in history and my drive is to continue that and put the club in a firm, self-sustainable and secure place to continue long after I have passed.
“It’s my third time trying and it’s been taking its toll.
“The academy decision left me questioning my involvement in rugby league and also that of my wife.
“It’s flabbergasting that the game can turn down such an intent of investment from someone with the means and proven track record of doing so. I was so taken aback I felt no fight, despite my beliefs that the decision is anti-competitive and a restriction of trade and a decision I do not feel would stand up to a strong legal challenge.
“That said, it isn’t the time for that immediate fight. I had to rejuvenate myself to not give in to the current situation and the job in hand of maintaining our Super League status.”
The Centurions, who have lost all nine games so far, were always up against it this year as late replacements for Toronto and with significantly less central funding than the other 11 clubs.
Beaumont has now appointed himself as head of rugby for a second time following the departures of Garreth Carvell and coach John Duffy, with Kurt Haggerty in caretaker charge for the second time against Catalans today.
■ SHAUN WANE has handed Wakefield back-rower Joe Westerman a first England call-up for seven years. Team-mate Reece Lyne, Catalans winger Tom Davies and Warrington scrum-half Gareth Widdop are also added to the national training squad.
