Bangers war sizzles

- ■ by AARON TINNEY

SAUSAGE wars continued yesterday as Euro bosses were warned to “respect” our right to decide how we ship our bangers.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab accused“europrats” of trying to undermine the status of Northern Ireland.

He let rip after French president Emmanuel Macron claimed Northern Ireland was not part of the UK.

Mr Raab said: “We have serially seen senior EU figures talk about Northern

Ireland as if it was some kind of different country to the UK.

“It is not only offensive, it has real world effects on the communities in

Northern Ireland and creates great concern, great consternation.

“We need a bit of respect here.”

His rant came after

Prime Minister Boris

Johnson met senior EU figures at the G7 Summit in Cornwall.

But he failed to reach a breakthrough in the row over the implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol.

Eurocrats are threatening to start a trade war with Britain if the Government tears up the Brexit “divorce” deal and refuses to carry out EU customs checks on chilled meats set for Northern Ireland.

The sausage war could mean bangers will not be shipped across the Irish Sea after June 30.

NORTHERN Ireland is a proud part of the United Kingdom.

It’s about time the EU got this into their heads.

People living there have just as much right to munch on our brilliant British sausages as the rest of the UK.

It’s crazy that far-too-rigid EU rules over Brexit are threatening what diners can put on their plate.

Boris Johnson rightly put the boot into bungling French President Emmanuel Macron as he tried, and failed, to split our nations.

How would he feel if Toulouse sausages were banned from Paris?

It’s nonsense and the impasse needs to be negotiated and resolved.

Yet again Eurocrats seem to think they can have things all their own way. Well hard luck.

We’ve quit the union.

And we have the right to trade our bangers, as well as many other goods, within our isles.
