PUBS AND BEACHES ARE PACKED Can I borrow your sun cream? Mine’s run out

BRITS bronzed on beaches and panted in parks yesterday as temperatures hit 28C.

This scene in Southend-on-sea, Essex, was typical of seaside towns across the nation with many sun worshippers – including the one below – looking like they needed a decent dollop of lotion.

Britain’s hotspots were warmer than Ibiza’s 27C and Tenerife’s 26C.

It was just short of the hottest day of the year – June 2 when Northolt, west London, hit 28.3C.

However, forecasters reckon this could be tomorrow.

Met Office meteorologist Martin Bowles said: “It’s nine degrees above average for June 13, so it is hot.

“It’s not officially a heatwave as yet though, as we need three days of consecutive high temperatures.”

But sunseekers were urged to make the most of the sizzler as thunderstorms are set to hit the UK this week. Raging 50mph gales and up to 50mm smashed today or of rain could fall on Wednesday, with temperatures falling to 21C.

The Met Office’s Marco Petagna said: “Very warm but increasingly moist, unstable air will reach the UK midweek.

“There is potential for significant thunderstorms midweek as very warm air in place across the UK gets replaced by cooler Atlantic air from the west.

“The end of next week looks cooler with low pressure near the north of the UK.”

John Hammond, of weathertrending, added: “As is often the case at this time of year, there’s the chance of some thunderstorms appearing at this volatile interface between the departing dome of warmth and the arriving trough of cooler air.”

He added that the blustery winds could continue into the weekend.
