Thunder to follow hottest day

Sun-starved Brits have been warned to make the most of the heatwave before a 36-hour thundersto­rm hits.

Yesterday saw the hottest day of the year so far – 28.6C at Heathrow, in west London, and today is set to stay the same.

The previous high was 28.3C recorded in Northolt, northwest London, on June 2.

But summer will be back on hold as downpours and floods strike from tomorrow.

THE Milky Way stretches into the distance as countless stars spangle the sky and the sun dips beneath the sea in a stunning shot.

Recent ultra-clear conditions provided this amazing view of the heavens – taken at Lulworth Cove on Dorset’s famous Jurassic Coast. of the nation until Friday. In some spots, almost 2ins of rain is forecast in two to three hours.

It warned: “Some places are likely to see thundersto­rms late Wednesday through Friday with the potential for travel disruption and flooding.”

Met Office meteorolog­ist Annie Shuttlewor­th added: “Wednesday evening, we start to see things turn unsettled as hot conditions in the south allow thundersto­rms to develop.”

Homes and businesses could be flooded, buildings damaged and power cuts are expected as 50mph gales sweep in.

Public transport and roads are also likely to be affected.

All of the south-east, London, the Midlands and parts of the south-west are covered in the warning along with eastern Wales and most of the north, including Liverpool, Newcastle and Yorkshire.

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “Very warm but increasing­ly moist unstable air will reach the UK midweek. The end of next week looks cooler.”
