Pilot husband staged gem raid to dodge jail
CAROLINE Crouch’s husband faked a robbery so he could “raise his daughter” and not end up in jail for murder.
Babis Anagnostopoulos appeared in a Greek court yesterday charged with killing the 20-year-old Brit.
The 33-year-old – who was wearing a bulletproof vest – was interrogated by police after cops discovered Caroline’s fitness tracker showed her heart stopped before the “breakin”. And her husband’s phone showed he had moved between the attic and basement – when he claimed he had spent the night tied up.
He cracked and told officers: “I killed her. I will tell you everything.
“I tied myself up. I did everything because when
I realised I killed her, I thought of my child.”
He admitted smothering Caroline with a pillow during a fight after she threatened to leave him with their baby daughter.
He placed the child next to the body and even drowned the pet dog.
Anagnostopoulos was arrested moments after embracing his mother-in-law at a memorial service on the island of Alonissos – where Caroline grew up – last week.
The helicopter pilot told mourners he had been asked to identify a “new suspect” but was actually taken away for questioning.
He admitted making up the story about a break-in. Anagnostopoulos had said three Albanian gangsters tied up him and his wife, threatened to shoot their baby, strangled Caroline to death and fled with £10,000.
His confession comes just five weeks after he read a eulogy over Caroline’s grave at her funeral.
