Ted’s top of league

- TED LASSO: SEASON TWO (Apple TV+ from Friday)

★★★★★

LAST season ended on a low point for AFC Richmond and their clueless yet super-optimistic American manger Ted.

Defeat to Manchester City meant relegation from the Premier League.

And veteran midfielder Roy Kent was forced to accept his playing days were over.

But as Jason Sudeikis’s multi-award winning comedy returns for a second run, Ted is still in his post, with the club’s owner Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) having refused to accept his resignation.

Also still there are Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) and newly promoted assistant Nate (Nick Mohammed).

And there’s a fresh positivity around the place. Except, that is, in the head of talented young Mexican Dani Rojas (Cristo Fernández). Dani is suffering a crisis of confidence (I shan’t reveal what triggers it, but let’s just say you can’t blame him). Can sports psychologist Sharon (Sarah Niles) help him rediscover his mojo?

Meanwhile, a certain sports channel wants to sign Roy (Brett Goldstein) as a pundit. Girlfriend Keeley (Juno Temple) thinks he’d be amazing.

Roy sounds slightly less keen: “I don’t want to be a f***ing football pundit,” is how he actually puts it, “sat on f***ing telly in a dumb f***ing suit like a know-it-all t***.

“It’s a s*** job for s*** people, I’d rather s*** up my own f***ing mouth than do that f***ing s***.”

Episodes one and two of this excellent second season arrive on Friday.

There’ll be another every Friday after that.
