John Dixon didn’t realise the extent of his hearing problems

Musician John Dixon can hear every note when he performs with his folk and Celtic band, but that wasn’t always the case. His hearing loss, caused by a career in the steel industry, has now been improved thanks to Amplifon, a global leader in hearing care with 165 hearing centres in the UK. Years of working with heavy machinery had led to John’s problems, but he wasn’t aware how much his hearing had been affected until he decided to go for a test.

the settings easily depending on the environment he is in. He can change the volume, treble and bass, filter out background noise and select settings created to suit his lifestyle. Now a builder, he says this has made life on a construction site much easier.

“If I’m in a noisy pub I would change it to the party setting, if I’m playing music, especially on the stage, I can change it to the music setting,” he says. “I used to get a lot of feedback when I played an A or a B note on the harmonica, but that’s gone now I can change the setting. There’s also an outdoor setting for when I’m outside and it’s a bit breezy, which is very handy.”

While he has found his hearing to be much clearer, John’s family has also noticed a difference in him... “I can hear what people are saying now so they’ve noticed I don’t have to say ‘pardon’ all the time,” he says. “The hearing aids are very small so a lot of people don’t even realise I’m wearing them.

I answer the phone the first time now too because I can hear it ringing.”
