WAITING GAME

Sea and sand set to boost brilliant chaser

- By CHRIS GOULDING

WAITING PATIENTLY, the talented but fragile chaser, has received a clean bill of health from his new trainer for his return to action in the Betfair Chase.

Formerly under the care of Ruth Jefferson, the 10-year-old was switched to Christian Williams as his training regime is expected to benefit the gelding who has had various injury problems.

He will run in the Grade One chase at Haydock on Saturday.

The 38-year-old Welshman, who partnered Denman in his early career, said: “He’s going well and I’m looking forward to Saturday.

“Fingers crossed we will have a drop of rain. We couldn’t be happier with him. We’ve had a great run with him. I’ve been lucky to get a horse like him. My staff have worked hard on him.

“He goes to the beach, paddles and his training takes place in deep sand.”

Williams has shown that he is a master with his staying chasers that benefit from a routine at his Ogmore-by-sea stables in Glamorgan that mirrors that of triple

Grand National winner Red Rum, who exercised on the Southport beach.

“Brian Hughes rides on Saturday,” added Williams about the 8-1 chance.

“After Saturday, hopefully, he will then go to Kempton for the King George VI Chase.”

Saturday’s Grade One chase has attracted a host of stars that include

last season’s Cheltenham Gold Cup runner up A Plus Tard, the 13-8 favourite.

Bristol De Mai, attempting to equal Kauto Star’s record four victories, is next best at 7-2.

His trainer Nigel Twiston-davies, certainly not short of confidence, said: “One thing he has in his favour is he is easy to get fit. Will they all be as fit as he is?”
