NEW GAFFER NO DESPERATE DEAN SO’TON
NORWICH
DEAN SMITH does not want to hear the word “desperation” about Norwich’s hopes of avoiding relegation.
The new Canaries manager is convinced his beleaguered squad – one win in 11 games with just five goals scored and 26 conceded – has enough to get out of trouble.
Smith faces his first match in charge today against Southampton at Carrow Road.
The 50-year-old, who was only sacked by Aston Villa 12 days ago and only in charge in East Anglia for five days, will have a minibus load of supporters coming up from his native Birmingham to cheer him on.
He has only had two training sessions with his new squad but the ex-walsall, Brentford and Villa boss – never relegated as a manager – has laid down some ground rules.
Smith said: “I would 3pm, not use the word desperation.
“There is certainly a will to get better, improve and collect the points we require.
“It has been a tough start and five points from 11 games is not enough at this stage but we know we can win games and collect points quickly.
“From what I have seen on the training ground, the quality is there to get enough points, and the players need to have that belief.
“We know there are big problems there as we are the lowest scorers in English football, so we need to create more chances. But defensively we need to be harder to beat. That was one of the things I stressed when I came through the door.
“We can make a difference.
“Some principles I like in my team and there are some non-negotiables but there won’t be massive change. I spoke about small details which can change games.
“We are looking to get results as soon as we can. I need important relationships with the senior players, the leaders of the group.
“People say I am putting my reputation on the line taking on a club at the bottom of the league.
“People will call it a risk. I call it a challenge.”
