HEALTH Secretary Sajid Javid says jabs, not herd immunity, mean Britain is better protected against a Covid winter wave than some European countries.
Mr Javid said 80% are double jabbed, adding: “I do think the reason we have such a high level of protection is primarily down to our vaccination programme.
“If you look at some of those countries in Europe now that have seen the biggest surges, they have a much lower overall vaccination rate.”
ANOTHER 61 Covid deaths took the UK total to 143,927. A further 40,004 cases were announced. And 15,064,693 people have had a booster or third vaccine jab.

Slowhand, 76, admits he has lost friends over promoting the non-wearing of masks and writing antilockdown songs with pal Van Morrison.
He said he will not perform on a stage where the audience have been “forced” to take the vaccine.
And he said it’s only really his own family who have stuck by him since he spoke out.
He said: “My family and friends think [I’m] a crackpot anyway. Over the last year, there’s been a lot of disappearing – a lot of dust around, with people moving away quite quickly.
“It has, for me, refined the kind of friendships I have.

“And it’s dwindled down to the people that I obviously really need and love.
“Inside my family, that became quite pivotal…i’ve got teenage girls, and an older girl who’s in her thirties – and they’ve all had to kind of give me leeway because I haven’t been able to convince any of them.”
He has also been shunned by muso friends, admitting: “I would try to reach out to fellow musicians and sometimes I just don’t hear from them.
“My phone doesn’t ring very often. I don’t get that many texts and emails any more.”
Clapton released an anti-lockdown song last year with Morrison, entitled Stand And Deliver.
Despite his views on Covid vaccines, the former Cream guitarist has received two doses of the Astrazeneca jab.
