EVANS FIT TO FIGHT THE DROP

- ■ by BRENDAN McLOUGHLIN

FIT-AGAIN Jonny Evans is determined to play his part in Leicester’s survival mission under Dean Smith.

The second-bottom Foxes are pinning their hopes of a great escape on new boss Smith but his reign begins with a daunting trip to Manchester City on Saturday.

But with games against Wolves, Leeds and Everton to follow, Leicester are hoping to climb out of the drop zone under a fresh set of eyes.

The absence of influential skipper Evans (inset), who has not started a Premier League match for six months, has certainly been felt.

But the Northern Ireland defender was among the substitutes for Saturday’s loss to Bournemouth after overcoming a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury.

“I’m just desperate to get out on the pitch and support the team and try to affect the match,” said Evans, who suffered relegation with West

Brom in 2018.

“It’s been a difficult time. Hopefully I’m over it now. It’s been stop-start with injuries. My last game was away at Bournemouth back in October.

“I just want to give every bit of input I can and it’s easier to do that on the pitch. I can give words of support, but as a player you want to be leading on the pitch and leading by example.”

Leicester have claimed just one point from the last 24 available, which led to the sacking of Brendan Rodgers but boss Smith says the squad made a positive first impression in training this week.

He said: “I thought the boys were fantastic. They showed great attitude and the qualities we need. I’m looking for that enthusiasm.

“We said we wanted a lift and if it remains the same as what we’ve seen so far then we’ll be pleased.”
